Express Entry - Canada's Points System

Express Entry is not random. It is a points system called CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System). The higher your CRS score, the faster you get invited to apply for PR. Most skilled Indians can score 420-480 points.

3 Express Entry Streams
CRS-based Selection
👔
Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
For skilled workers with foreign experience. Need 1+ year of skilled work experience in a NOC category 0, 1, 2, or 3 job. Most Indian IT, finance, engineering, and healthcare professionals qualify here. IELTS CLB 7 minimum (roughly 6.0 band average).
450-480Typical CRS
🍁
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
Fastest path for Indians already in Canada on PGWP or work permit. Need 1 year of Canadian skilled work experience. CRS scores for CEC are lower than FSW. If you study in Canada and work for 1 year, this is your track.
420-440Typical CRS
🔧
Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
For certified tradespeople - electricians, plumbers, welders, heavy equipment operators. Canada has a massive trades shortage. Easier IELTS requirement (CLB 5 for speaking and listening). Job offer makes this straightforward.
400-420Typical CRS

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points - essentially a guaranteed invite. These are the most active streams for Indians in 2026.

India to Canada PR - Step by Step

1
Get IELTS CLB 7+ (roughly 6.5 average band)
This is non-negotiable for Express Entry. Aim for 7.0 in writing, 7.5 in speaking and listening. Many coaching centers in India specialize in Canadian CLB preparation. CELPIP is an alternative - computer-based and many find it easier.
Prep time: 2-4 months
2
Get ECA (Educational Credential Assessment)
Your Indian degrees must be evaluated by WES (World Education Services) to be counted for CRS points. Apply early - WES takes 2-4 months. Bachelors = 120 CRS points. Masters = more.
2-4 months - apply immediately after IELTS
3
Create Express Entry Profile
Submit your profile to the Express Entry pool. Calculate your CRS score using the free IRCC calculator. Most skilled Indians score 440-480. Profile is valid for 12 months. Can resubmit if not invited.
1 day to create
4
Get ITA (Invitation to Apply)
IRCC holds draws roughly every 2 weeks. If your CRS meets the cutoff, you get an ITA. You then have 60 days to submit a full PR application. Getting a provincial nomination (PNP) before this adds 600 CRS points instantly.
3-12 months in pool
5
Submit PR Application + Medicals + Police Clearance
60 days to submit everything: passport documents, employment history, police clearance from India, medical exam from a IRCC-designated physician. Most applicants submit within 30 days if documents are ready.
60 days from ITA
6
Receive COPR - Confirm Permanent Residency
IRCC processes and approves. You receive Confirmation of Permanent Residence. Fly to Canada to activate. You are now a permanent resident. 5 years later you can apply for Canadian citizenship.
6-8 months after submitting

Tips Specifically for Indians Applying to Canada

Start IELTS preparation and WES evaluation simultaneously. Both take months and you need both before creating your Express Entry profile. Most people delay WES and lose 3-4 months unnecessarily.
Brampton is not ideal for networking. While the Indian community is enormous in Brampton and Mississauga, the best job opportunities are in downtown Toronto. Live where the community is, commute where the jobs are.
Canadian references are more valuable than Indian references. When applying for Canadian jobs, a Canadian LinkedIn recommendation from even one local professional is worth more than 10 Indian ones. Build this network from day one.
Your Indian CA qualification is not automatic. CPA Canada requires bridging exams. Start this process before you land - some modules can be done online from India. This takes 12-24 months so early action matters.
Get an LMIA-backed offer if possible. A Labour Market Impact Assessment job offer adds 50-200 CRS points depending on the NOC category. Ask employers directly if they can sponsor - many say no on job postings but will say yes when approached.
